Acts 5:34-42 Psalms 27:1, 4, 13-14 John 6:1-15 "We are who we are in God's sight -- nothing more and nothing less." Who are we in God's sight? We are the Church, the Body of Christ continuing Christ's work for the coming of our Father's Kingdom "on earth as it is in heaven." Commentators on John's Gospel point out that that John's Last Supper account contains no narrative of the institution of the Eucharist. But they note further that John assumes the presence of the Eucharist in the community and that Jesus' miraculous multiplication of the loaves and fishes is his theologizing on the significance of the Eucharist. Receiving the Eucharist is the deepest experience of our Christian identity. And so Catholic ministers of the Eucharist are instructed to present the Eucharist with the audible words "the Body of Christ" while silently adding "to the Body of Christ." Yes, the Eucharist is the presentation of the Body of Christ (the sacramental Christ) to the Body of Christ (the Church). "We are who we are in God's sight -- nothing more and nothing less."
And at each Eucharist we celebrate the deepest experience of our identity.
We are the Body of Christ, Christ's presence to our poor troubled world
-- nothing more and nothing less!
