Praying Ordinary Time

About St. Peter Claver, S.J.

An invitation to make the
Online Retreat

As I prayed and reflected with today’s readings, I heard a gentle voice saying “Come back, remember.”  I heard God calling me back – to remember – much as God called to the Israelites in the Old Testament.  I heard God inviting me to look beneath, behind and beyond the “laws” and remember that it is God that is there.  I heard God inviting me to look beneath, behind, and beyond the physical cures of antibiotics and chemotherapy and aspirin and to remember that it is God who created those with the gifts to discover or create the cures.  I heard God inviting me to look beneath, behind and beyond the struggles of life, of transitions, broken relationships and death, and to remember that God is with me in those as well through the presence of others and with hope.  I then heard God invite me to look deeper still, to remember that at the core of everything is Love.  God is the source of Love. God is my help. God is the source of healing and reconciliation.  Then I remembered the awe and joy I experienced at the recent solar eclipse and the weddings of my children.  God is the source of that joy as well and suddenly I was hearing the invitation from God to remember that God is in everything.

Sometimes, many times, I get caught up in the surface of things, the day-to-day, the “shoulds” of life, the rules and laws.  I forget to take time to pause for a “Sabbath” and remember the Source, Love.

So, today, I hear a call and I invite all of us to pause and take a deeper look at what is around us, what we are experiencing and to notice God beneath, behind and beyond.  How and where is God calling us to look more deeply?
