An Even Better Marriage

In today’s gospel. The Pharisees question Jesus about the topics of marriage, and specifically divorce.  This can be a very controversial topic today.  I’d like to share some thoughts that have come to mind as I reflected on this lesson.

We are in the middle of ‘wedding season’.  Summertime has traditionally been a time for people to marry.  The winter and springtime are full of bridal fairs where vendors gather to showcase all things necessary to pull of an extravagant event.  How many people really take the time to truly discern the vocation to marriage.  It’s much, much more than the ‘day.’

Marriage was intended to last ‘until death do us part.’  It’s not easy. The everyday ‘busyness’ can impact the marital relationship.  Significant disagreements can disrupt the marital relationship.  Unfaithfulness to the marital vows can damage the marital relationship.
Divorce rates are at an all-time high. I believe that there are truly some situations in which a marriage cannot be salvaged.  However, it seems that the sacred vows, and promises made between the couple are sometimes forgotten.

Just for today, let us who are married take some time to reflect on the promises made on our wedding day.  If marriage is not our vocation, we can consider our most valued relationship. Besides reflecting on promises, let us think about what we are doing to care for that relationship.  What are we doing to help it grow?  Where is special attention needed?
Let us all spend some time in gratitude for the blessings of the relationship as well as the lessons learned after some of the difficult times.

Just for today, let us do something special for ourselves and our partner, taking care of each other.
