In the summer of 2017, I traveled to Uganda with a group of students and a colleague on pilgrimage. We spent a Sunday with the community at Kasana Cathedral Parish in Luweero, Uganda. We witnessed the sacrament of Baptism during Mass and were treated to a gathering of the community afterwards. The parish priest, Fr. Joe, had organized a feast and various performances by groups in the parish. For three hours, everyone dined on delicious food while youth and adult groups in the parish performed traditional dances, songs, and even a play written just for our visit. I could not stop smiling and still cannot think of another time when I smiled with such enjoyment for so long! The gratuitousness of God’s love was on its fullest display here! We left that experience with such full hearts, bellies, and spirits.

Today’s readings call us to this generosity – to be agents of God’s gratuitous love. The generosity of God’s love has no bounds, and this boundlessness invites us to reflect where we are setting up boundaries to our generosity. Am I creating boundaries around my generosity? How am I being called to extend my generosity to those most in need? How can I move closer to being of God’s “same mind… same love”?

May we respond to this invitation to greater generosity with gratitude and humility.
