Brief Video Intro to General Congregation 36

Understanding the Logo for the Congregation

"The logo for GC 36 was inspired by Pope Francis’ message to the Jesuits on the 200th anniversary of the restoration of the Society of Jesus. On September 27, 2014, in the Church of the Gesù in Rome, the pope urged Jesuits to discern in difficult times; to be receptive of and obedient to the will of God; and to row with him in the service of the church according to the call of Jesus to his disciples: 'Put out into the deep.'

"On the logo, the IHS represents the Society’s boat in the church, and the waves represent the sea where Jesuits are invited to enter and row out into, toward frontiers. The cross represents the sail where the Spirit blows, helping the Society row. The flame above the cross represents “a fire that kindles other fires,” a link to Decree 2 from GC 35 on rediscovering the Jesuit charism."

A General Congregation is the highest governing body of the Society of Jesus. It has two main purposes. It is called whenever it is necessary to elect a new Superior of the whole Society of Jesus - traditionally on the death of the Superior General, but the current Superior and his predicessor both resigned. The second purpose of the Congregation is to handle busiess of the Society that can not be handled by the Superior General and his staff. Only the Congregation can make changes to the Constitutions of the Society.

This will be the 36th General Congregation since the Society was founded in 1540.

The Congregation is prepared for through the process of each Province of the Society electing delegates to Province Congregations. These gatherings select delegates to the General Congregation, based upon the size of the Province - larger Provinces sending more delegates. The Province Congregation is asked to send postulata - postulates or suggestions - for the General Congregation to consider. In the case of this Congregation, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, S.J., the outgoing Superior, asked the Province Congregations to name three areas in which the Society is being called to join Jesus in his mission in the world today.

Delegates from each portion of the world have been gathering to review those responses and to prepare a presention on the State of the Society of Jesus today, which will be among the first things the Congregation will consider.
