David Hollenbach, S.J., is the University Chair in Human Rights & International Justice at Boston College, He also delivered the first Markoe-DePorres Social Justice Lecture at Creighton in 1994.

HollenbachIn 1998, Hollenbach received the John Courtney Murray Award from the Catholic Theological Society of America and in 2009 the Marianist Award from the University of Dayton. He is the author of many books, including the influential Claims in Conflict: Retrieving and Renewing the Catholic Human Rights Tradition, and most recently, Driven from Home: Protecting the Rights of Forced Migrants and Refugee Rights: Ethics, Advocacy, and Africa.

The Markoe-DePorres lecture series is sponsored by the Justice and Peace Studies Program in Creighton's College of Arts and Sciences, in honor of Fr. John Markoe, S.J., who started the Omaha DePorres Club in 1947. The club included Creighton students and members of the community united against racial injustice. Their patron, Martin de Porres, a Peruvian of mixed ancestry, was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1962.
