Love Will Steer Me True: A Mother and Daughter’s Conversations on Life, Love, and God by Jane and Ellen Knuth Loyola Press, 2014 An Advent Reading Group with a wonderful book about family, listening, service and love Jane Knuth is a wife, a mother and a math teacher.  She is the author of the moving books, Thrift Store Saints and Thrift Store Graces, about her experiences learning from customers at a Vincent de Paul thrift store where she volunteers.  Ellen, her daughter, went to Japan to teach in an area where there are no Catholic Churches. This book is a series of reflections, by Jane and by Ellen, in their different places, as they reflect upon their lives and the meaning of their faith, and of the power of love.  Jane worries intensely about how Ellen’s faith will survive in her environment.  In the end, both of them listen to each other.  Both of them learn from each other and the people they serve.  And, both realize that the deepest bond between them, is at the root of their faith and their service – the power of love. This story will be of interest to every parent, to every adult child, to everyone wondering how to grow in faith in our complex world.  For any of us who struggle to listen to others who come from a different perspective, this is a book to cherish.  For all of us who want to understand Pope Francis’ encouragement for us to not try to be a “smaller, purer Church,” but a “bigger, messier one,” this intimate, easy to read, sharing of a mother and daughter offers us a way to understand part of what Francis is saying to us.
