What
is Mom Prom?
My son hasn't asked me yet
What
do we wear?
I heard there
will be flowers this year?
What's the menu?
We want
to sit with friends. How do we do that?
Can I just send in a note
saying saying we want to sit with ... and give their names?
I
know the tables are for 10. We don't have a group of 10.
We'd
like to meet new people and are open to sitting anyplace.
Our
special group likes to have all of the tables in the same area.
We've
paid for Mom Prom - do we need to bring cash?
What's the raffle?
There's
a photographer?
What about
students without a mother available to accompany them?
What is the music
that night?

Reminder
I still
have questions about Mom Prom
What's Mom Prom?
An excuse for Mothers and Sons to spend an evening together.
As a secondary purpose, it's a fundraiser for the Post Prom party held in
May. Both events are sponsored by the Prep Parent's Board.
My son hasn't asked me
yet!
The most popular way is this: The mother tells the son "We're
going!"
Ignore the howls of protest. He'll go because so many others are
going. You'll both have a great time.
What do we wear?
There is no official dress code, but the sons usually wear a shirt
and tie. The moms wear a variety of outfits from slacks to skirts, even some
dresses. Some of the moms like to dress up a little more.
A word of caution - with 1,300 people dancing in a small area,
it's hot! This may be the time to leave the turtlenecks and wool jackets
at home, or dress in layers.
I heard there will be flowers this year?
If you decide to order flowers when you send in your reservation,
the boys will wear red carnations and pastel colors will be available for
the moms. Flowers for Mom are $2; for the sons, $3.
What's the menu for the night?
Mom Prom dinner will be boneless chicken breast, tossed salad,
garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls and butter, and strawberry ice
cream with a cookie.
We
want to sit with friends. How do we do that?
If you want to sit with friends, the only way to do that is to
put all checks and reservation forms for your table in the same envelope
and mail it to Mom Prom's reservation chair:
Marge Jenkins
1620 N. 94th St.
Omaha, NE 68114
Can I just send in a note
saying saying we want to sit with ... and give their names?
Unfortunately, no. Mom Prom has outgrown the ability to
be that flexible in seating arrangements.
Mom Prom has been around since the mid-1980s and it started with
just a few hundred people. Seating arrangements which were once fairly easy,
have grown increasingly complex since then. At nearly 1,300 people,
this is the largest event sponsored by Prep. Our volunteers simply
aren't able to track down the reservations for such a large group.
I
know the tables are for 10. We don't have a group of 10.
It's ok. Just send in the reservations for any of those you want
to sit together. If there are empty places at that table, mothers and
students from the same class will be seated there.
We'd
like to meet new people and are open to sitting anyplace.
Great. Send in your reservation and you will be seated at other
class tables. If your son is a sophomore, you will be seated with other sophomores
and moms.
Our
special group likes to have all of the tables in the same area.
Many clubs like to have the tables together. Unfortunately, we
can no longer accommodate those seating arrangements. It was do-able
when we had a dance of 400 or 600 or even 800, but the logistics have
become impossible for a volunteer group of moms who are the committee.
We've
paid for Mom Prom - do we need to bring cash?
Cash could come in handy for a few things at Mom Prom:
- The Holiday Inn's soft drink bar - $1.50 per soft drink; iced
water free!
- Coat check - staffed by volunteer Prep Dads to raise money for
Post Prom
- Raffle: $1 each/6 for $5. Tickets are sold that night by
volunteer Prep Dads, trying to raise money for Post Prom.
What's the raffle?
The raffle has something for everyone this year! There will
be two prizes:
An i-Pod digital music player for one of the students
and
A beaded bracelet and earrings for a lucky mom.
Raffle tickets are $1 each/ 6 for $5. The drawing will be
held after dinner just before the dancing begins.
There's a photographer?
For those who would like a photo of the evening, a professional
photography studio will have a number of photographers available in the lobby
of the Holiday Inn from 5:30 to 7 p.m. You and your son/s can
have your photos taken for delivery to school or your home a few weeks later.
Please bring the form that was included with your invitation and a check to
order photos.
What about students without a mother
available to accompany them?
This can be difficult for those who don't have a mother who can
attend. Those students are encouraged to go with a friend and his mother
or bring another adult woman who is special to you.
What is the music that night?
Denny Aliano, “DA the DJ,” a longtime Prep supporter has been
providing DJ music for Mom Prom for years - for free. He does a great
job of getting the moms and sons dancing and having fun. Thank him
if you see him that night!
A Reservation Reminder:
1. Do send in your reservations -
in one envelope - to Marge Jenkins by Monday, Feb.
2.
2. Don't send it to school with your
son. If it ever makes it out of the backpack, it will never get to
the right person's home where the reservations are being coordinated.
3. Don't mail it to Prep. The
school staff is not organizing Mom Prom - volunteer Prep parents are.
