Thank you for praying for our Jesuit brother, Fr. Paul Mahowald, S.J. in the last hours of his life on earth.  He was ready to return to the Lord, which he said he had prepared for all his life.

After ordination to the Priesthood, Fr. Mahowald was a high school chemistry teacher before being assigned to be the Business Manager at America magazine, the national Jesuit publication.  He served there for 12 years before serving in the business office at Creighton Prep for 10 years.  Since 1997 he has been in full-time parish ministry, first living at the Creighton U. Retreat Center, near Griswld, Iowa, and serving three rural parishes.  Most recently he has been one of the Associate Pastors at St. John’s Parish.

Those of us who knew Paul were inspired by his passion for service, sometimes in the face of great struggles with his health.  He was devoted to his C.L.C. community, to Mass and Confessions at St. John’s, helping couples individually, to being a Daily Reflections writer and to serving in a number of ways in the Jesuit community.

Since Paul donated his body to the Creighton School of Medicine, there will be a Memorial Service scheduled sometime this week.

Megan has been spiking high fevers and is miserable with mouth sores from the radiation. Paula writes, “She was scheduled for a pre-surgery MRI Wednesday afternoon, which they have moved to first thing tomorrow morning.  The MRI should show if there are any signs of infection in her mouth as well as any changes to the tumor site since the last MRI in mid-May.  Hopefully, it will have continued to shrink with two more rounds of chemo and the radiation treatments. At this point, it's looking like surgery will be postponed as her mouth has to be completely healed and she needs to be off the antibiotics before that will be an option.” The family appreciates continued prayers.

Your prayers are requested for two men who were volunteering to help our Haiti Relief effort in the Dominican Republic.

John Ward & Jim Jalovec died last night (January 4) as their private helicopter went down in the mountains, as they were leaving the Dominican Republic, to return to their home in Naples, Florida.  Jalovec was a Marquette U. business grad and long-time friend of Fr. Bill Johnson, S.J., our Jesuit Chaplain at the ILAC Center.  They had spent several days, offering their helicopter and their services, shuttling supplies between the ILAC Center and the hospital in Jimani, near the Haitian border.

Obviously, this loss is a tremendous one for their families, but is deeply felt by Bill and the ILAC staff who were very grateful for their generosity and service this past week.  On top of the ongoing struggle with death, damage, disease and poverty our team has been encountering, this loss is quite difficult.
