In the midst of the Advent season, we constantly hear readings, responsorial psalms, and sermons which emphasize preparation for Jesus’ coming. We must always remember the miracle and magnitude of Christ’s incarnation, for it is a fundamental aspect of our faith. However, it is of equal importance to also remember that Christ is always present in our world -- every day, all the time. Jesus incarnate came to the earth so many years ago but has not left. Advent is a perfect time for us to remember Jesus’ coming but it also helps us recognize his constant earthly presence.

Jesus’ everlasting accompaniment with us is explained in the Gospel reading through Jesus teaching the disciples. His preferential option for the lost sheep clearly demonstrates his identification to the lost and suffering of this world. The beauty of our incarnated faith is that Jesus is still so devoted to the oppressed that he remains present and active on earth. It is no coincidence that we hear about the importance of preparing the way of the Lord on the same day that we hear about our call to search for the lost. He calls us to be present and active in service to him by doing so to the outcasts of society. There is no better way to celebrate the Advent season than following the example that Jesus so clearly spells out for us.
