Let us pray in gratitude to God for our Jesuit brother, Fr. Edward A. Larkin, S.J., who died on December 13th in Wauwatosa, WI. He was 86 years old. Fr. Larkin had been a member of the Creighton Community for a number of years before going to St. Camillus Jesuit retirement community this past year. All the students who served in the Jesuit dining room during the years Fr. Larkin was here, and many of the staff in the Administration building, fondly remember his personal care and his great sense of humor. This brief story indicates the rich diversity of Fr. Larkin's service over his life's ministry.

Fr. Ed Larkin was born in Omaha on March 5, 1922 and was baptized at St. Bridget Church. He grew up in the neighborhood around Creighton and attended St. John’s Grade School and then Creighton Prep, graduating in 1940. After one year at Creighton University, he entered the Society of Jesus on August 17, 1941. He was ordained a priest on June 16, 1954. After earning a Licentiate in Sacred Theology at St. Louis University, Ed was assigned to St. Francis Mission as school principal and history teacher until 1961 and then as teacher of history, speech and religion. In 1962 he was missioned to be assistant principal at Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien, WI. After two years in that position he enrolled at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and received the M.S. degree in counseling in 1966. Even before completing that degree, he started teaching theology at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, WI and remained in that assignment for twenty-two years. Ed took the year 1986-1987 for an update in theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA. In 1986 he left Marquette High to return to Omaha and Creighton Prep, where he taught theology for one year and then served as pastoral minister. From Prep he was assigned to Creighton University to serve as pastoral minister. In between Ed found time to substitute for absent pastors in South Dakota and invariably organized Scripture lectures for the parish members, which both he and they loved. As his health required closer attention, in 2008 he was missioned to pray for the Church and the Society as a member of the St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, WI, where he died.

Funeral services will be held at Creighton, in St. John's on Friday, December 19th at 10:00 a.m.

Update 10/6: Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 6 from 5-7 p.m. at St. John's Church with funeral services set for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Church.

Fr. Jim Egan died last evening (Oct. 2) at 7:52 p.m. at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, NE.

Following upon a very rich weekend spent with his dear friend, J.J.O’Leary, Jesuits, diocesan priests, friends, colleagues, parishioners from St. Benedict the Moor and St. John’s, all these good people had formed a procession of love and gratitude that tended to Jim the four days he resided there. “It’s all abundance,” he said on Monday. Jim declined slowly but steadily from Monday morning. By Tuesday evening, Wednesday for sure, he mainly slept. Still many came to sit with him, to speak to him, and to be present to him right through until his passing tonight.

Wouldn’t you know it but many of us, friends and brothers, were either at the War & Peace debate here on campus or watching the vice-presidential debate, two events Jim would not have missed for all the world, but for his final and full response to the divine summons.

Funeral plans are pending. It looks best now to celebrate the wake on Monday night and the Mass of the Resurrection on Tuesday morning at St. John’s if all plans with family and friends come together.

May the angels take you into paradise, Jim.
May Lee, Larry, and Driscoll welcome you home.

--Roc O’Connor, SJ
Rector, Jesuit Community at Creighton University

It is a sad thing to announce, but our brother, Jim Egan, S.J., entered hospice care here in Omaha on Monday, Sept. 28, due to the return and spread of cancer that he has battled for about four years. After receiving this recent diagnosis, Jim found a great deal of peace with it, finally knowing what was causing the sudden onset of physical weakness.

Jim is known to the people of St. John’s who attend the 5 pm Saturday Mass as a fine presider and powerful homilist. He connected with people who have known suffering by his honest reflection on the Word in light of his own journey. Before that, he served as “Servant Minister,” spiritual director to priests of the Archdiocese of Omaha for about ten years.

Jim is content to be in hospice care. He has no pain to cope with at this point. He is deeply grateful for the gift God has given him in living as a Jesuit for 56 years, for the many people whom he has loved and served, as well as the many who have loved him. Please remember Fr. Jim Egan, S.J. in his final days on earth. Pray that God may continue to support him with peace so that Jim’s final offering of his life may be one of joy.

Thanks for your prayers. --Fr. Roc O’Connor, SJ

We have received word that former Creighton student, Peter Jessup died last week after apparently falling an unknown distance from the 14,156-foot peak.

An experienced outdoorsman, Peter Brian Jessup had turned 27 Thursday and decided to celebrate by hiking in the Maroon Bells. His body was recovered at about 13,400 feet, and according to an article in the Rocky Mountain News, sheriff's investigators said he likely died from injuries caused by a fall. Medical examiners believe he had been there for at least eight hours before the incident was reported, meaning he likely died on his birthday.

A native of Glenwood Springs, Peter Jessup graduated with a degree in philosophy from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., in 2003. He was one of the first residents of the Spirit of Peace House. After graduation, he worked as a community organizer with Catholic Charities in Glenwood Springs. "He was helping people in the valley to find affordable housing," said his brother. Services are pending in Colorado and a service/memorial is being planned at Creighton, possibly Friday.

Fr. Larry Gillick had a gall bladder attack while giving the Holy Week retreat to the men at St. Camillus. His message to the men was that interruptions are to be seen as invitations from God. So, he will be invited to have gall bladder surgery on Friday this week in Omaha. Larry thought that Fr. Krettek would seize the opportunity to say something like “the retreat at St. Camillus galled him.”

Please keep Fr. Gillick in your prayers as he undergoes surgery on Friday and we hope for a speedy recovery.

Update 2/19: This update was received from his mom this morning: Although Sean is still in ICU, he is much improved, only still somewhat dependent on the oxygen assistance for breathing. He is taking small walks around ICU and is telling everyone he is ready to go home, and that his Mom should stop hovering! The doctors think it’s prudent to take things very slowly since the root causes of Sean’s collapse are still under investigation.

Let’s give thanks to God with Sean’s Mom and Dad (Jodie and Mike), and his two younger brothers! The family wants everyone to know how grateful are for all our support and prayers while Sean has been in such serious condition. She is so happy to have her son back again, and grateful to the Creighton community for praying with them all the while. Visitors are cleared to see Sean now, too. He is at CUMC.

Update 2/15: Sean Kenney's condition has improved though he still remains in CUMC at this time. His family is very thankful for all the cards, phone calls and expressions of concern for Sean and their family but requests that visits are not possible at this time. Let us continue to pray for Sean's full and speedy recovery.

Our prayers are asked for Sean Kenney, a freshman and resident of Swanson Hall who is hospitalized with complications related to prior surgeries he had during high school. Cards are welcomed, however visits are limited to family for now.

If you would like to send a card please address it to Sean Kenney, Creighton University Medical Center, room 3116.
