It is my sad duty to report the death this morning (April 4) of Fr. Howard Kalb, S.J.  He died quietly while having breakfast in the Jesuit community.

Howard has served as a previous Pastor of St. John’s Parish and as Director of the Creighton University Retreat Center.  He has accompanied a Christian Life Community group for many years.  He served as the faithful and beloved chaplain for the Sisters of Mercy at their Mercy Villa retirement center.  He gave many retreats at our retreat center in the Twin Cities.  He sometimes volunteered to read for the children at the Russell Child Development Center on campus.  Howard was a long time member of a team of writers for the Daily Reflections on our Online Ministries web site.

Howard was 88 years old.  He will be greatly missed for his sense of humor and pastoral care for so many.

A wake service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10 with the Funeral Mass following at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Church. Burial will be at Holy Sepulcher cemetery following the Mass.

From Gerald Brundo, Friday, January 27, 2012
It is exactly two weeks since my triple by-pass surgery and I am on the mend. I have been to cardiac rehab twice (at our own splendid Creighton Cardiac Center) and I am feeling good. I am scheduled there Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and, in addition, I can work at home on my treadmill and exercise bicycle. Recovery from this type of surgery can take many weeks. My future, scheduled appointments with my MDs will shed more light as to when they think I can return.
Please accept my sincere gratitude to so many of you who sent me e-mails, cards and prayers. Creighton is certainly a special place and the warmth and caring from colleagues around the campus is something for which I am very, very grateful.

Our dear Jesuit brother, Jack Zuercher, died on Saturday evening, after a brief stay at Hospice House.  He was wonderfully ready to die and inspired visitors by his inner peace.

A fuller obituary will be coming with the arrangements for a memorial service because Jack donated his body to the Medical School.

Jack’s academic career was in Psychology, but the Society of Jesus tapped him to be the Superior of our house of early formation in Minnesota in the 1960’s.  He then became the Director of Formation for all the men in formation in our Province, at a most difficult time of transition after the Second Vatican Council.  He was appointed Rector of the Jesuit Community at Creighton University in 1976. It was during his time at Rector that Jack became deeply involved with the CLC, the Creighton Life Community, working with others to form one of the most vibrant CLC areas in the country. After 6 years as Rector, he had the vision to see the need for forming lay colleagues for their mission of serving in an Ignatian inspired ministry.  So, he asked Fr. Morrison for permission to start a Mission and Identity ministry at Creighton and thus became the founder of the Collaborative Ministry Office and led the way, along with Joan Lanahan, in this lay formation ministry in the U.S. among Jesuit colleges and universities..  He was the Director of the Collaborative Ministry Office, and Chaplain of the Law School, until 1997, when he retired to work full-time as our Province Ecclesial Assistant for the Christian life Community.  He will be remembered for the depth, humanity and inclusivity of his spirituality, for his sense of humor and inner comfort with a diversity of people, and the personal way he helped so many find intimacy with God in all things.

May our Lord embrace and reward this faithful servant and friend to so many of us.

Please remember in your prayer a 4th year Pharmacy distance student and her family.
Rebecca (Becky) Coon died in a car accident outside of Spokane, Washington on December 29th.  She was on her way home from her Drug Information rotation at WSU and there were slick driving conditions and bad weather.
She and her husband Jacob have 2 daughters, ages 10 and 8 years old, Amity Rose, and Dara Nicole.
A memorial service has been planned for Becky on Thursday, January 6th at 2pm at Suburban Christian Church in Corvallis, Oregon.  Corvallis is where Becky grew up and she has many friends and family there. Her father, Steve Lee, has asked us to share this info with the Creighton Community.
Dr. Carla Christensen, Pharm D, who is their class advisor (a close knit class of about 50 people) is flying out to attend the service. The class is also in the process of planning a memorial book, and a service when they return here to graduate in May.
