“Jesus was amazed!” Within the Gospels, the people and His disciples are almost always amazed at the wonders Jesus performs, but this time, Jesus has the opportunity to be awed at the faith this man exhibits. This man believes in Jesus so much that purely with Jesus’ words, he knows something unfathomable will occur. What a lesson for us! So often our human nature needs to see concrete evidence to accept something. But like Mary, who believed the angel Gabriel when he told her Elizabeth was with child and set out to visit her, this man exhibits the epitome of faith as well in believing without seeing.

At each Mass, we witness the miracle where Heaven and Earth collide. We should “go rejoicing to the house of the Lord” every time we visit. Can we do this better? Can we arrive with an excited heart acknowledging a yearning for Holy Communion? We must prepare ourselves in mind and spirit in order to be as fully attentive as possible to the graces we can receive, to understand the fullness of the words we say, and to have our turn being amazed because of God’s great love!
