‘Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it.’ –Luke 17:33

This paradox has always puzzled me. How can one lose her life while at the same time saving it? How can taking steps to protect your life cause you to lose it?

It occurred to me today that Jesus may be drawing a distinction between having life and truly living. It’s so easy to let fear rule our lives, control our actions, form our relationships. Trust me, I let this happen all too often. Perhaps Jesus is suggesting that we not focus on living a long life, but on living a full life- one that will spill over to the world beyond. I don’t want to be on my deathbed realizing I’ve let my fears keep me from becoming the person the Lord wants me to be- from loving as Jesus would.

Today, let’s try not to let our own inhibitions hold us back from being the Body of Christ.
