“Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide,
But he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the lands afflicted.
Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; The calf and the young lion shall browse together.” Isaiah 11:3-6

Today’s reading sparks a wonderful image, that of the wolf being the guest of the lamb, of things that are of opposite nature dwelling together. Such relationships exist often for a common vision, goal, or purpose. The responsorial psalm states Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever. This is a reason for opposites to work together for a greater purpose: justice and peace for all.

With the election season recently ending in the United States, it is hard to not think of the recent occurrences. Our nation now has a new president elect who has stated throughout the election season the importance of working together as one, regardless of one’s party affiliation. Much like the calf and the young lion browse together, differing political parties must join together with common purposes in mind.

As a new political term begins, may we be aware of the importance of setting aside our differences for the betterment of our world. May we be mindful of what is occurring locally, nationally, and internationally and the role(s) we have in that. May we be called to action and realize that we truly can make a difference in our world!
