276] Acts 8:26-40
Ps 66:8-9, 16-17, 20
John 6:44-51

The Responsorial Psalm for today has us responding “Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.” I know, for me at least, this isn’t always the easiest proclamation to make. Working as a teacher in a high school, I see my fair share of tough moments. Whether that is tears from a poor grade, self-induced silence from fear, or worn down spirits from the constant demands and expectations of society today. These times are tough, and they really put my faith to the test. I find myself asking God, “Why” so, so often... And sometimes even losing the will to question any longer.

Of course, life isn’t always like this though. In fact, I would say that the alternative is definitely the primary reality. I am blessed far more often to witness and partake in countless experiences of success, joy, and jubilation. I can think of so many examples, even just this week, of the praise I have showered on my students for the random acts of kindness I have seen them do for one another.

And yet, how strange that in these circumstances, I do find myself “crying out with joy,” but it seems that is rarely to God. Perhaps later in the day, when I journal or do a Jesuit examen, I will come to find God in the situation; but at the moment, that seems to so rarely be my first inclination. Something for me to ponder this week ...
