“Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way.” Psalm 139:1

Today’s responsorial psalm is from one of my all-time favorite Bible passages in the book of Psalms. It is so incredible to think about this: God, our Father, knows us so well that he knows literally everything about us. He knew all of us before we were even created, and he knows all of our thoughts, words, and actions of today and everyday. Sometimes, I find myself feeling unimportant in the eyes of the world, but this passage always reminds me of how much God actually loves me. In the words of St. Augustine, “God loves each of us as if there were only of us.” He can do this because he is infinite. It doesn’t matter what we have done or what we will do, God’s unconditional love triumphs over evil every moment of every day.

The Gospel from today also provides some interesting insights into how we should live our everyday lives. Is it better to be like Martha, who works hard and makes sure everything is in order, or to be like Mary, who is just present and listens to Jesus speak? I often find myself being more like Martha, getting bogged down in my day’s work and forgetting to take time to be present and enjoy the company around me. Today, let us pray in thanksgiving for God’s unconditional love. Let us pray that he helps us find balance in our lives, even among many distractions. Let us pray that the Lord “guides us along the everlasting way.”
