The Daily Reflection for Today

“Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” John 4:48

Is God’s promise not enough for us? He tells us again and again that he will rescue us and “create new heavens and a new earth,” but we constantly implore him to show us a glimpse of that promise. We constantly want to be assured of his goodness.

God knows that we are weak and doubting creatures. Our sin has stained that unwavering faith we are called to have and blinds us from the fullness of Truth that he wants to reveal to us. The royal official in the Gospel believes that Jesus has the power to heal his son, but they both know that the man doubts this power. It took him a leap of faith to say, “Sir, come down before my child dies,” and when Jesus said that his son would be healed “the man believed.” Yet, the gospel also said that he only comes to truly believe when he realizes that his son was healed at the same time that Jesus said, “You son will live.” The royal official’s faith wavers! He believes that Jesus has the power to heal, but soon doubts it.

We so often over-think and question how God is working in our lives and where he is trying to heal and love us; this is our doubt. At one point we may believe whole-heartedly and joyfully in his power to save and heal and a moment later be completely doubting of his love. At these times, remember the graces he has given us! We are both body and soul; God will work our spiritual lives in conjunction with our physical lives. If we doubt his presence, his power, his love, we must hold on to those graces he has poured on us in the past to keep up from the temptations of thinking that he is not near us. God is always near us in his love, even if we cannot feel his presence.

We will doubt and we will struggle, but in those doubts we must remember the “signs and wonders” that have been revealed to us. We ask God again to live in the graces he has given us, and then, “No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there, or the sound of crying.” “There shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create.”

Rest in Christ Jesus so that when he lifts us from our doubts we can sing, “I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.” Let the “signs and wonders” that God reveals to us, both a physical and spiritual being, remind us of his constant love and help as he changes “mourning into dancing.”
