Jesus reminds us in the gospel today that “whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

Do we really believe this? How often do we try and find our comfort elsewhere? The world offers us fleeting satisfaction, but this is not the case with our Savior. He desires to fill us in a way so deep and beyond our understanding. I think however there should be great emphasis on “whoever comes to me.” There is a call to action on our part and we cannot be passive in our faith, but rather seek it with passionate hearts. God is unchanging and therefore His promise to fill us is constant and eternal regardless of our response to Him. Therefore the only prerequisite to be filled in this deep way that He describes is to come to Him. He desires for us to spend time with Him and get to know Him because when we do know Him in a deep way, we will indeed be satisfied. Ultimately, Jesus tells us that his mission from the Father is that He “should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day.” We are valuable possessions in the sight of God and he will do whatever it takes to seek the lost and to keep them in the light. He greatly desires to fulfill our deepest desires and longings and reminds us that this is only but a slight taste and precursor to eternal life with Him when we are raised.

So today, may we stop trying to be fulfilled by the things of the world and simply come to Him.
