The Happiness GPS
Jonathan was feeling lost in life. So, one day, he bought a new gadget called the “Happiness GPS.” The box promised: “Find your way to joy—no matter where you are!”
Excited, Tom turned it on. The device blinked and said:
“Recalculating route to happiness…” It beeped and gave him directions:
“Turn off social media in 500 feet. At the next intersection, take a left away from addictive habits. Warning: You are approaching a ‘Self-Pity motel’—please detour immediately. At junction, turn right to face-challenges-with-hope street.”
Jonathan laughed but kept going.
Then the GPS said: “You have arrived at your destination… Happiness is inside your fridge next to the salad.”
He opened the fridge. There it was. A lovely chocolate cake. He took a bite.
The GPS cheerfully said: “Happiness level: 95%. Mission accomplished.”
The Gospel tells us, “Happy are those servants whom the master will find awake when he comes.” How do we stay awake for Jesus? We do so by remaining prepared—by continually listening to the ever-present voice of God within us. Even when we drift or forget, we are called to return, again and again, to that inner voice.
In this sense, the Happiness GPS is the voice of Jesus, gently guiding us through our conscience to do what is right: to love, to serve, to be good to him through our neighbors. Even when we miss the route, God’s GPS re-routes us, always giving us a chance to repent at every step where we fail. In following God’s command, happiness is assured in two ways: we begin to live a spiritually healthy life, and we receive and bring joy to our good Lord.
After all, God deserves our happiness too, for we were created from his happiness. Perhaps, it takes is a little struggle to follow God’s GPS to find his happiness. Shall we?
