Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!

I sit by the stream
and watch the water and clouds roll by.
In that land of my birth I see
what you have created.

Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!

In the cities and towns of my youth I see
my sisters and brothers.
I see their ache for you but they do not
know their way.

Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!

Those who think they know you
tell me how to find you.
But as they clamor I cannot hear you.

Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!

My days fly by on wings of commitments,
seductive distractions that mask your voice.
The years harden my heart until
I wonder if I know you.

Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!

May my tongue cleave to my palate
so I can hear you.
May my tongue be silenced
so I can remember you.
May my heart be softened so
I may know you.

Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!
