Reading today’s Gospel made me think of the phrase we often hear: What have you done for me lately? We ask it of politicians, perhaps of people we work with, our families and friends. We may think of it if we don’t ask it out loud. We turn life into one giant transaction where we check the ledger to make sure we are coming out ahead. What am I getting out of this? No doubt, that can be a reasonable question to ask before we spend time or energy or even resources on something.
But in a world obsessed with data points and hustle and winning, we need to turn our focus on what is right and good and true. To be generous with not only our resources if we can, but with our time and presence.
What have I done for others lately? What can I do to ease another’s burden? My time and presence could be enough to lift someone up. This is my prayer today: What can I do, here and now, to bring hope, and kindness into a world that sorely needs both?
