Celebrating Easter |
Today’s gospel describes an interaction between Jesus and Peter. Peter is very concerned about how Jesus feels about another disciple. Peter seems to feel somebody will become Jesus’ ‘favorite’. Jesus refuses to entertain Peter’s inquiries and in fact, admonishes him: “What concern is it of yours? In a sense, Jesus was telling Peter to ‘mind his own business.’ This causes Peter distress. We can take some time to think about what Peter’s state of mind may have been during this interaction. Would it have been better for him to worry about himself, and not someone else? Have I ever been so deeply hurt by another that I didn't know how to respond? We can take some time today to consider how Jesus may have been talking with us during a difficult time. Did I feel abandoned at the time? Do I feel differently today after reflecting on the situation? Today’s gospel goes on to point out that there is no way to articulate all of the wonderful things Jesus did during his time on earth. Just for today, think about the blessings that we’ve received. Did any of the blessings grow out of difficulty? “I will not cause pain without allowing something new to be born.” Isaiah 66:9 |
