It took me quite some time to reflect upon today’s verses. Through prayer, discussion, and simple reflection, something eventually stuck out to me about what this verse was trying to say. Wholehearted honesty is the reason I tell you this, as honesty is what my reflection has shown me in this verse.

When I think about honesty, or communication in general, I like to think of the game Telephone, where a word or phrase gets passed through a line of people and then shouted at the end, and everyone gets to laugh at how messed up the final product ended up being. This can happen in everyday life, but unfortunately is not intended to be a game. Through this process rumors are started, and miscommunications happen. In every conversation, words are exchanged, information is passed, and potentially lies are told on a daily basis. “Every word of God is tested” Prv. 30: 5. When someone talks from the Bible or even from their own reflections about what it means to be faithful, or about God himself, people are always questioning, always diving for answers. People do not always speak the truth, and twist the Word of God to fit their own designs. The verses today even state that adding to God’s Word marks you as someone who may be manipulating others, or a “deceiver”.

While we have many churches across the world, I cannot say that any are liars, and they are not being honest to their full potential. However, it is important for each of us to be sure to take God’s Word for its value to each of us as a person, and to think about and reflect upon what it means. Let us not let someone else twist our interpretations through force of their beliefs. We must follow what God tells us, as people capable of reason and thought, for he believes in our abilities to stand up for his Word, and his actions, and allows us to rely on him when we do not believe in ourselves.

In the end, there are those who will twist his words; however, it is up to each of us to discover their meaning for ourselves, and to ensure that his Word is held steadfast and strong, unwavering and powerful even in the strongest storms.
