When I read this verse, there is one word that sticks in my head throughout, and that is size. When Job is talking, he is responding to his “friends” who we don’t see in this verse. What does size mean? When Job is talking, he discusses the massiveness of God. When this comes to mind, it makes me think of the absolute size of the universe itself in which we live. How expansive and how truly and wholly unfathomable the sheer size of the space that has been created for which we care, goes to show exactly how much we have left to discover about not only ourselves, but about each other as well.

If we are created in the image of God, then, while we are not nearly as unfathomable and expansive as He, we are still quite large and complicated inside, much like the universe itself. I am not simply talking about the physiology of the human body, but the life that is created within. The soul and personality that is shaped and molded each and every day that we are alive. Learning, growing, and ever experiencing the true essence of life that we are shown on a regular basis. Seeing this life, and experience and understanding that it is different for each individual human being on the face of the Earth, not only leads us to realize exactly how we are impacted by the world, but also leads us to see that we cannot afford to merely live off of our own opinions. Rather, we need to embrace these opinions and use them to better formulate our own. All of these opinions not only contribute to our society and cultures, but also the expansiveness of our own being. This shows that, while we can be generalized to extremes, we are also still very distinctly individual, and very distinctly human.
