This passage from the Gospel of John refers to the primary reason that Jesus was persecuted and killed at the end of his time on earth. This reason according to the Gospel of John was blasphemy. The Jewish people accused Jesus of making himself God, or equal with God, when in their opinion it was not possible that he was one. They were not able to accept the fact that he might actually be the son of God and believe in him based off of all of the works that he had done. As part of the readings in this season of Lent, this Gospel is important to begin to emphasize the reasons given by the Jewish people for Jesus’ death.

Although many people benefited from his works and did not realize the extent of his importance to the world, Jesus was still rejected by the leaders of the religion. The context of this reading, however, was not the time which Jesus was actually captured and killed, thus he was able to escape the anger and hatred directed toward him. It would not be much longer though when he would begin the steps toward his death.

This season of Lent is a time when I am constantly reminded to reaffirm my belief in Jesus Christ. In the works he has done, his time spent on earth and all that he did for the world we must find inspiration to continue the passion and care based on his works. We must believe in his works so that we can understand and realize the reasons behind all of the works that he did and the reasoning behind his death.
