Praying Ordinary Time

How do I prepare for Mass on Sunday?

Pope Francis on instituting this Sunday as
"Sunday of the Word of God"

This Sunday's readings focus on God’s call to each of us and how we respond to that call.  In the first reading, Jonah is instructed by God to preach repentance to the Ninevites. The call to repentance and conversion is urgent and crucial for everyone who wishes to live a fulfilling life. "Repent" means to turn your mind and heart around and embrace the Kingdom of God. It is not a call for later but for now, and it requires an immediate response, just the people of Nineveh.

In the Gospel, Jesus calls his disciples who we are told left everything and followed Jesus. God demands a great deal from us, but it is no more than what He Himself has lived through. He endured difficulties, overcame temptations, and sacrificed His life for our sake. With His grace, we, too, can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness in our lives just like the disciples. The incarnation of God in Jesus Christ is a testament to His love for us and His desire to be with us in our circumstances. It gives rise to our best abilities and greatest possibilities, allowing fishermen to become disciples and ordinary people to become saints.

Therefore, let us heed the call to repentance and conversion, turn away from the kingdom of the world to the kingdom of God, and experience the restoration of everything that sin destroys. Let us embrace the Kingdom of Heaven, which is near, and live a fulfilling, joyful, and life pleasing to God.
