Praying Ordinary Time
|
One kind of prayer practice is imaginative prayer, where you immerse yourself in a reading from Scripture, imagining what it must have been like, what hearing the word of God must have felt like. The gospel writer Mark doesn’t tell us much about what this synagogue was like in Capernaum, only that Jesus went there to teach. Imagine this young man from another town. He taught differently than what the people were used to as they were astonished by his teaching. What was that like? This seemingly ordinary man who could teach with authority and who could command unclean spirits. You can imagine people left the synagogue, talking about what they had heard and witnessed, and then telling others: You’re not going to believe this. What would I have thought if I were one of those in the synagogue? Would I leave the synagogue and decide to keep following this man? In reality, in my modern life, I don’t always follow the path to follow Jesus, even though I want to. Yet, every day there are some detours, some slips, omissions where I lose my way. Sometimes I’m stubborn and feel righteous when I know I didn’t do what I should or I didn’t respond with kindness or love. My prayer today is ask for mercy and for courage to stay on the right path. |
