Pope Francis on the Assumption, in 2013

Today, we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of our Blessed Virgin Mary, a significant event that marks Mary's unique role in the life of the Church. This feast is not just a celebration but a profound reminder of the promise of salvation, filling us with hope for our own eventual entry into heaven.

For our reflection, I would like to dwell on the Magnificat, Mary’s song of thanksgiving and praise. In this Magnificat, Mary thanks God for allowing her to be a privileged servant of God. Moreover, through her song, Mary directs our attention to three important aspects of God. First, Mary emphasizes God's sight, acknowledging her humble condition and rejoicing in God as her Savior. She recognizes the significance of God looking upon her with mercy and His redeeming love, highlighting that no one is too insignificant for God. Secondly, Mary sings of God's strength, declaring His mercy is for those who fear Him and acknowledging His power to bring judgment or extend grace. She points to the strong arm of God, revealed through the life and sufferings of Christ, as the means of salvation for all who believe. Lastly, Mary refers to God's speech, recalling the covenant and promises made to Abraham and his descendants. She affirms the trustworthiness of God's word and His faithfulness in keeping His promises throughout history, including the fullness of salvation brought about through the birth of Jesus Christ.
Mary's song powerfully reminds us of God's character and actions: His merciful sight, mighty strength, and faithful speech. She invites us to join in her praise song and find joy in the same object of worship that captured her heart, uplifting and inspiring us in our faith.
