Praying Ordinary Time | Weekly Guide for Daily Prayer |
I am lucky to have my sight as well as the medical expertise and technology that provides my glasses and contacts. I experience a great feeling every morning as I put my contacts in and the world becomes clear. I can see near and far what had been some hazy, blurry outlines. In today’s Gospel, Jesus restores sight to a blind man: “Have sight. Your faith has saved you.” My own faith helps me put the world in sharper focus. My faith helps me see beyond the surface, in myself and in others. I see a friend who is distracted and looks worried. How do I act on what I see? What can I do to help my friend? Too often, I look away. That can be the easy way out. I can pretend not to see because it’s easier for me. Instead of looking away, let me look deeper and see what I can do. It might be as simple as listening or doing the dishes. Let me see what I can do, what my faith fuels me to do. I also can use my sight to turn inward, to examine my actions and the impact those actions have on others. I often quote the element of Jesuit spirituality – finding God in all things. To do that, you have to see. You have to look. You have to have faith that God is there, even in the difficult things. We have to see with our eyes and our hearts. We often say “I see” when a concept or an idea becomes clear. I see ways that I can do better in my life. I can see and pay attention to those around me. I have sight and I pray that I use my sight with faith-filled lens to truly find God in all things. |
