Praying Ordinary Time |
Today’s three readings tie together perfectly to all point to the truth of Jesus’ self-revelation. Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but I don’t think I have ever heard the passages in the Book of Daniel in the first reading. I am of course very familiar with the prophecies about Jesus in Isaiah and other Old Testament references that the New Testament writers describe as pertaining to Christ. Why do I get so excited when I hear something from the Old Testament that seems to so clearly foreshadow Christ? Isn’t my faith enough? Isn’t my personal knowledge of Him that I have learned through the New Testament, through the witness of others and my own personal prayer and reflection enough? Yes and no. Usually, that is enough. But sometimes, just sometimes, I need something more. Something that validates, as it says in 2nd Peter, that we are not following “cleverly designed myths.” To me, all three readings (Daniel, 2nd Peter and Mark: 9) are saying, “Pay attention! This is significant! He is significant!” They are saying it from different points in time and speaking to us today in another altogether different time. I find that amazing and comforting. “His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away.” Amen to that! |
