It’s Trinity Sunday. God is revealed as Father and Son and Holy Spirit – all three.  As Moses says in the first reading, “Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other: Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of?” God has found us, chosen us, and adopted us to be his own, part of his family. We are not slaves, he is not our master, but we call him Father, Abba, Daddy. We hear the voice of God speaking to us directly and intimately, including us as his children, as his family. “The LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other.” We are all part of the family. God is our Father. He chose us and adopted us. Jesus is our brother.

This weekend here in America we are also celebrating Memorial Day. I’m meeting my cousin and we are going to the cemetery to put flowers on the graves of our ancestors – there are five generations of our family in the rural cemetery. It meant a lot to my grandmother and we continue the tradition and remember our family. Jesus says in the gospel that he is with us always until the end of the age. Family is forever. I knew and remember my grandparents, and great-grandparents, and my great-great-grandmother, but there are also graves in the cemetery of my family members who died before I was even born, but they are still family. My grandparents are dead now, but they are still my family. Jesus lived, and died, and is in heaven now, but he is still our brother, still our God. In the Gospel he tells the disciples to go spread the news about Jesus, about the trinity, about the family of God. That’s still the story. This weekend we remember our family.
