This is a reflection from Angela on these readings in 2015.

Luke describes a time in which there were so many people gathering to see Jesus, that they were harming one another—trampling one another.  Jesus immediately cautions against hypocrisy.  The crowds were eager to see and hear Jesus, yet had no concern for each other while they sought Jesus.  Jesus likens hypocrisy to leaven—once it is ‘ingested’, the heart is affected.   Jesus warns against hypocrisy several times during his time on earth.  Let us take a moment to reflect on times in which our actions may have been infected with hypocrisy.  Has it been in our workplace?  Has it been as we parent?  Has it been carried out in a polling place?  Our God can see our heart, and Jesus reminds us:

“There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed,
nor secret that will not be known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness
will be heard in the light,
and what you have whispered behind closed doors
will be proclaimed on the housetops. 

Jesus reminds us who to fear, and that ultimately believers will be cared for by God.

Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?
Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.
Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
Do not be afraid.
You are worth more than many sparrows.”

I find great comfort knowing that my God willingly gives guidance through his son, Jesus Christ.  Jesus isn’t afraid to point out dangers, or faults—I believe in effort to teach us to do better.  Ultimately, he knows each of us intimately and cares for us as a Father.

Now that we’ve taken time to reflect on hypocrisy in our lives, let us rejoice knowing that we have a Father who watches over each and every one of us and holds us close.
